December 2025

'Tis The Season!

December means different things for different people...

🎄 At work, end of year often means a rush to get projects closed out, complete end of year reports and appraisals, and reconcile budgets.

❄️ It's also the time of year that people push themselves past their limits of exhaustion, gearing up for time off sick in the new year.

🎁 But if we are intentional, December can also be a great time for a reset and for end of year reflection. Taking this moment now could make January look very different for you and your team.

Reflection is one of the most under-rated self-care strategies, but it is a powerful tool to deepen self-awareness, take yourself off autopilot and make impactful shifts where they are most needed. Here is some inspiration for questions to reflect on, individually or with your team:
🪞 What am I most proud of from 2025? (Don't forget the small things!)
🪞 What am I most grateful for in 2025? (If it's a person, tell them!)
🪞 What do I want to leave behind before moving into 2026?
🪞 What was my greatest challenge in 2025 and what did I learn from it?

Spotlight On: Restorative Rest

This is a photo from the Golden Circle in Iceland. I took a six day trip at the start of November and I truly switched off. It was a very active trip, I didn't sit around and do nothing. But I didn't think about work or any of my responsibilities back at home. The result? I felt simultaneously energised and also deeply relaxed.

Last month we wrote about allostatic load, the gradual wear and tear on your body over time caused by chronic stress. Many of us think we stop for Christmas, but our brains and bodies keep pushing, keep pumping that cortisol into our systems, causing that invisible damage. This festive period, consider the seven different types of rest and how you can get some of each:

1️⃣ Physical rest - this could be sleeping/napping, or it could be gentle stretching, getting a massage, or a slow walk in nature.

2️⃣ Mental rest - a break from cognitive load, decision-making, strategic thinking and constant problem-solving. Uninstall your Teams app, lock away your laptop and take a couple of days off from making any decisions other than which cheese to eat.

3️⃣ Sensory rest - relief from overstimulation, screens, notifications, meetings, noise, bright lights. Light a candle, put on some relaxing music, embrace the calm.

4️⃣ Emotional rest - space to express feelings honestly and stop performing or “holding it together”. Either alone or with a trusted loved one, take time to connect to how you really are. You can use the reflective questions above to help.

5️⃣ Social rest - time away from draining relationships and more time with energising, supportive ones. December can be full of social obligations so make sure you book in time with people who actually recharge your social battery.

6️⃣ Creative rest - restore your inspiration. Go to a gallery, cook something new, engage in something playful and joyful.

7️⃣ Spiritual Rest - connect to meaning, purpose, values, or something bigger than work. Check out our August newsletter for a Whole Self Audit template.

Wellbeing In The News

We round up the latest in wellbeing news so that you can keep your finger on the pulse:

💡 This in-depth article from Forbes describes a pattern that underpins all our approaches: self-awareness and the ability to label how we are feeling is the key to true resilience and mental wellness. A good reminder that silence is costly.

💡 The Unmind Workplace Mental Health Trends 2025 report reveals that 91% of HR leaders in the UK see employee mental health as important to business success - this is actually DOWN from 99% last year. However, 16% of managers still receive no mental health training, and nearly half have only attended a single session. A big theme in 2025 was the recognition that manager training is a crucial aspect of an overall wellbeing strategy, so hopefully this will carry forward into 2026.

💡 Later in December we'll be publishing a longer piece on allostatic load. This article from CEO Magazine outlines a similar message. Our upcoming article will give you more practical ways to stop your high performers silently reaching exhaustion.

Straight From The Source:

In November we facilitated a high energy half day workshop on the topic of 'Optimising Communication In The Workplace'. Leadership wanted to shift the historic culture of blame and siloed working, and support staff to take a positive and professional approach to communicating.

The organisation already had a lot of the groundwork in place - a great values document and a co-created style guide to constructing emails... but something was missing. It was clear the staff knew how to communicate in theory, they just needed something to make that land in practice. Here is what we did:

🌟 We focused on the WHY - Why does it benefit you to communicate positively and professionally? Why does it benefit your customers? Why does it benefit the organisation?

🌟 We gave space for staff to reflect on the factors that were causing them to slip into less than ideal patterns of communication, such as cognitive biases and their own heightened stress levels.

🌟 We taught neuroscience-backed emotion regulation strategies to support staff to take that pause and reconnect their frontal lobe when they needed to.

🌟 We used activities and tailored case studies to enable staff to put these skills into practice.

🤓 Engagement in the workshop was excellent and initial feedback was positive. We're going back in two months to find out what the impact has been... watch this space for a case study!
